OpenAI has quietly shifted Codex from a developer-centric coding assistant into a broader enterprise productivity platform. On Tuesday, the company released six new role-specific plugins for Codex, each targeting a different type of white-collar knowledge work.
The six new plugins cover data analytics, creative production, sales support, product design, equity investing, and investment banking. Available initially to enterprise subscribers, the plugins are intended to work out-of-the-box but become significantly more capable as users configure and customize them to their workflows.
The announcement was accompanied by an internal usage report from OpenAI, which found that Codex has now surpassed 5 million weekly active users, a more-than-six-fold increase since the launch of the desktop application in February 2026. Notably, the data shows that a growing share of Codex users are not software engineers at all, but business analysts, marketers, designers, and financial professionals.
OpenAI describes this shift as Codex evolving into an "agentic collaborator" for knowledge work across disciplines. Rather than simply generating code, the tool is increasingly being used to automate research tasks, draft structured documents, analyze datasets, and manage multi-step workflows that would previously require human coordination across teams.
The move mirrors a similar strategy from Anthropic, which launched its Enterprise Agents program in February and followed with finance-specific agents in May. The competition to own the enterprise AI agent layer is intensifying, with both companies trying to displace legacy workflow tools and expand AI's role beyond the developer segment.
OpenAI has also been rapidly expanding Codex's integrations with enterprise software systems. With the new plugins, the company is effectively building a suite of vertical AI agents that can be deployed across a company without requiring deep technical expertise from end users.
