Meta has announced a new partnership with Broadcom to co-develop multiple generations of custom AI silicon, a move that signals how aggressively large platforms are trying to control their compute destiny. In its newsroom post, Meta framed the collaboration as a long-term investment in the hardware foundation required for its AI roadmap, rather than a one-off product cycle.

At a strategic level, this is about reducing dependence on off-the-shelf accelerators and tuning hardware more tightly for Meta’s own workloads. Custom silicon can potentially improve performance-per-watt and lower the cost of inference at scale, especially for services that run continuously across consumer products, advertising systems, and enterprise-facing APIs.
