Google Adds More Source Links to AI Overviews in Major Course Correction

New 'Further Exploration' and 'Expert Advice' sections aim to give publishers more visibility inside AI-generated search answers.

Google is changing how its AI Overviews surface information. After two years of publishers complaining that AI-generated answers were keeping users on Google instead of sending them to original sources, the search giant is introducing new features designed to drive more traffic back to websites.

The most significant change is a new section called "Further Exploration," which will appear at the bottom of AI Overviews and AI Mode responses. This box will link to articles and analysis relevant to the query, presented as a bullet-point list. In one example shown by Google, a search for urban green spaces produced suggested links to content about specific projects in New York and Singapore.

Google is also adding an "Expert Advice" section that offers snippets from news outlets, reviews, and public forums. Each snippet includes a direct link so users can "jump to the full conversation." Additionally, the company promises more source links throughout AI answers, continuing to appear as small pills at the end of paragraphs. Hovering over these links will soon trigger a pop-up preview with more information about the site.

Publishers Have Been Pushing Back

The tension between Google and publishers has been building since AI Overviews launched. Website owners argued that the feature reduced click-through rates by answering queries directly on the search results page. Some media companies reported traffic drops and blamed AI Overviews for diverting users who would otherwise have visited their sites.

Google has never admitted that AI Overviews caused publisher traffic declines. But the new features represent a clear concession to an industry that provides the content powering Google’s search index. By surfacing more links and giving users explicit reasons to click through, Google is attempting to rebuild trust with the publishing ecosystem.

Why It Matters

For content creators, SEO professionals, and media businesses, these changes could reshape traffic patterns. If Google follows through and prominently displays publisher links, sites that produce high-quality original reporting may see a recovery in search-driven visits. For enterprises that rely on content marketing and organic search, the update underscores a critical reality: AI search is evolving rapidly, and visibility strategies must adapt. The broader signal is that even the largest tech platforms cannot ignore the publishers that fuel their products. Sustainable AI search will require a healthier partnership between platforms and content creators.
