Anthropic is no longer the quiet challenger in the AI race. At the company’s Code with Claude developer conference this week, CEO Dario Amodei dropped a figure that silenced the room: Anthropic has reached a $30 billion annualized revenue run rate, up from roughly $9 billion at the end of 2025. The growth is being driven by an 80-fold surge in usage and enterprise adoption that even Anthropic’s own forecasts failed to predict.
Amodei, a former OpenAI research VP with a Princeton PhD in computational neuroscience, is not known for hyperbole. So when he described the growth as "just crazy" and "too hard to handle," the industry took notice. The numbers tell a remarkable story. Anthropic’s annualized run rate climbed from $87 million in January 2024 to $1 billion by December 2024, then $9 billion by the end of 2025, $14 billion in February 2026, $19 billion in March, and now $30 billion in April.
For perspective, Salesforce needed about two decades to reach $30 billion in annual revenue. Anthropic has done it in under three years.
Claude Code Is the Engine
The product powering much of this growth is Claude Code, Anthropic’s agentic AI coding assistant. Launched publicly in mid-2025, Claude Code hit $1 billion in annualized revenue within six months and crossed $2.5 billion by February 2026. The tool does not simply suggest snippets; it reads entire codebases, plans sequences of actions, executes them using real development tools, evaluates results, and adjusts its approach.
Enterprise adoption has been staggering. Anthropic now counts more than 1,000 enterprise customers spending over $1 million per year on Claude services, a figure that has doubled since February. Customers include Uber and Netflix. The average developer using Claude Code now spends 20 hours per week working with the tool.
At Anthropic itself, the majority of code is now written by Claude Code. Engineers have shifted to architecture, product thinking, and orchestrating multiple agents in parallel. Amodei noted that this is the first year Anthropic’s internal pull requests have inflected upward because of Claude’s contribution to the company’s own codebase.
Why It Matters
Anthropic’s trajectory signals a broader shift in how enterprises adopt AI. Coding agents are no longer experimental toys; they are becoming core infrastructure. The feedback loop Anthropic has created, using its own product to build its own product, is a competitive moat that rivals will struggle to replicate. For CIOs and engineering leaders, the message is clear: agentic AI is moving from pilot to production at a pace that demands immediate strategic planning.
